| Serving a Groom's cake is a tradition that is seeing a come back as more couples are enjoying the fun and creativity that the Groom's Cake offers. Traditionally the Groom's Cake was cut into small slices and placed is cake bags or boxes for the unmarried female guests to take home and place under the pillows. It was said that they would dream of their future husband. The Groom's cake was usually a dark cake to contrast the light color of the wedding or Bride's cake which most often white. In the 'old' days that meant it was fruit cake but the tradition evolved to include chocolate. Today, the Groom's Cake can be a fun addition to a wedding. It usually reflects some interest of the Groom, whether it be his profession, his character or a favorite past time. Often the Bride orders the cake as a surprise for her soon-to-be husband. More and more I have seen the groom undertake the creation of his own cake. Finally something he can do with little or no input from the often single-handed, party planning bride-to-be. Groom's cake can really be served anytime depending on the desires of the couple. Some choose to serve it at the rehearsal dinner. Others serve it at the wedding as an alternative to the wedding cake. Because these cakes are often quite intricate and elaborately decorated my favorite option is to have it on display at the wedding and then serve it as a late night snack for the bridal party and last lingering guests after all the partying and dancing is all done or to save it for the next day when newly married couples often get together with close friends and families as a closing celebration before going off on their honeymoon. If you decide to get a Groom's cake just remember to have fun with it. |
